L’green fundamentalism It’s one of the biggest problems of the West, it’s obvious. Nicola Porro tells it in his “The Big Green Lie” (Liberi Libri) and it is confirmed by the reality of the facts, certainly much more important than Taliban chatter and projects. According to the usual suspects, the electric cars they would represent the present and the future, with combustion vehicles destined for oblivion within a few years. But everyday life and above all the numbers say otherwise: the boom in cars on tap still represents a utopia, while registrations of petrol and diesel vehicles are increasing in almost all of Europe. The data regarding Ferrari and Fiat 500 are emblematic.

The numbers reported by Milano Finanza do not leave much room for interpretation: Ferrari it sold 13,663 examples in 2023 for a total of 6 billion euros in revenues. In other words, it sold more than 1,100 models per month. The figures for electric cars are anything but rosy: Stellantis in Italy, in April, sold just 100 500 electric. Worrying figures, considering that we are talking about one of the most sought-after small cars on tap on the Italian market. Knockout news for all those who blame the flop of electric vehicles on prohibitive costs: the least expensive Ferrari model costs 260 thousand euros. Ten times more than the electric 500.

The problems for electric ones they are various and of a different nature. The price represents only one of the critical issues: from lack of attractiveness to ruthless competition, passing through the natural resistance to change. The governor of Bank of Italy Fabio Panetta placed the emphasis on trade wars and the energy transition: “The obstacles that prevent us from fully grasping the potential, in terms of economy of scale and consumer base, of an internal market comparable to that of the United States, even at in order to increase competition and the ability to innovate”.

The United States is focusing on tariffs to combat Chinese excessive power, but the EU must start from reduction of energy dependence. Only in this way – according to experts – will it be possible to contain production costs and increase competitiveness. In simple terms, only in this way can prices be within everyone’s reach. A necessary turning point to radically change today’s numbers: just think that in Italy in the first months of 2024 the electric market share was 2.8 percent. With all due respect to the green colored fanatics.
