Professional studies: declining numbers, strong shortage of young people

Freelancing, compared to the past, appears less attractive and professional firms, including lawyers and accountants, are struggling to find new recruits, which makes generational change more complex. “In recent years there has been a decline for all professions. Between 2018 and 2022, the last year for which we have overall data, we saw an overall reduction of 5%, with a decline especially for professionals in the technical area (-4.9%) and in the health sector (-12 .9%). There is also a progressive aging of the professional sector, in fact in 2009 68.7% were under 50 years old and in 2022 the figure rose to 55.5%. The decrease has especially affected young people, -10% by 2022,” he said Gaetano Stellapresident of Confprofessioni, during one of the panels of the 19th edition of the Trento Economics Festival, organized by the Gruppo 24 Ore and Trentino Marketing on behalf of the Autonomous Province of Trento and in collaboration with the Municipality of Trento and the University of Trento.

“We can see a recovery exclusively in employed work, while the propensity to choose the freelance profession is decreasing, in fact only 18% of graduates have undertaken a non-employed professional activity”, with a hold among accountants and labor consultants, but with a decline in other sectors, including the legal profession. “The aging of the population affects the country, but also the legal profession. The data released by the Pension Fund show that the number of lawyers is progressively reducing, compared to the 2020 report, which refers to 2019, there is a reduction of almost 10,000 lawyers, in 2019 we were almost 246,000 and today we are 236,000, and the Bar seniority rate has significantly increased. In the first part of the 2000s the average age was 42 years, while today it has risen to over 48 years”, said Francesco Greco, president of the National Bar Council.
