Telepass, UnipolMove and MooneyGo: comparison of prices and services

The tele-toll it has always been a godsend for millions of Italian motorists who have thus stopped queuing up in long queues at motorway toll booths which, especially in the holiday season, could become kilometers long. Telepass has thus benefited from a monopolistic situation in this sector, being the only one authorized to offer the service but in recent years things have changed. Following a law on the liberalization of the electronic toll market the way has been opened to new competitors by creating competition which, as we know, by fighting on prices benefits consumers.

The two services currently available in addition to Telepass I am UnipolMove And MooneyGoin this article we put them all three compared to help you understand which one is best suited to your needs.

What Telepass offers and how much it costs

Telepass has had the classic monopolistic advantages for a long time and for this reason it has often had good and bad times, both in terms of services and costs. However, since we started talking about market liberalisation, it has started to diversify its offer to increase revenues and remain competitive. Over time it has therefore developed different offers that are added to the Telepass Base, also called Telepass Family, let’s see them in detail:

  • Basic Telepass: it costs 1.83 euros per month with quarterly billing, excluding the costs of tolls and additional services. From 1 July 2024, however, the price will go to 3.90 euros per month. Activation is only possible at points in the Telepass network. The services included include: memo for important vehicle deadlines, payment for Area C in Milan, payments in affiliated car parks (airports, stations, fairs) and ferry to the Strait of Messina.
  • Telepass Easy: it costs 2 euros per month, divided into 1.26 euros for the device and 0.74 euros for the app services, billed quarterly at 6 euros every three months. From 1 July 2024 the price increases to 4.64 euros per month. The app allows various operations such as paying for parking on blue lines, car washing with WashOut, refueling, charging for electric vehicles, paying car tax and booking for vehicle inspection.
  • Telepass Plus: Free for the first six months, thereafter the monthly fee is 3 euros, divided into 1.76 euros for the device and 1.24 euros for Telepass Pay services. From 1 July 2024 the price increases to 4.90 euros per month. The services are more extensive than the basic package and include sharing of bikes, scooters and scooters, payment of car tax, train and bus travel, purchase of tickets for public transport in Milan and Rome, ski passes, pagoPA and others.
  • Telepass Pay Per Use: No fixed monthly fee, with an activation fee of 10 euros and a cost of 2.5 euros per month only if the device is used during the month. Includes Telepass Pay services.
  • Telepass Pay: No fee for the first year, subsequently 5.9 euros per month, or 2.5 euros per month if you meet certain conditions such as crediting your salary or pension to the account connected to the device, being under 25 years old or spending at least 200 euros per month with the BNL card. From 1 July 2024 the price increases to 7.90 euros per month. The package includes the device, Telepass services, an account and a BNL prepaid card. It also includes Telepass Plus services.
  • Telepass Next: Available only with a Telepass Plus subscription, it integrates various services through an intelligent and connected device, which includes a voice assistant capable of interacting with the outside. It allows, among other things, the automatic payment of parking on blue lines and the location of the vehicle. It also acts as a black box. The cost is 35 euros for installation plus a monthly fee of 5 euros.

The main strengths of Telepass, in addition to the broader portfolio of services, are the coverage of the Sicilian motorway network, 4 foreign countries (Croatia, France, Spain and Portugal) and the presence of a 30% discount on motorcycle tolls.

The main weakness is the price which, after the increase effective from 1 July 2024, will be the most expensive with any subscription.

What UnipolMove offers and how much it costs

UnipolMove offers itself as the main alternative to Telepass as it is the only one capable of offering comparable completeness. In addition to the electronic toll service, it offers coverage for payment in Milan C area, affiliated car parks, taxis, fuel, car and motorbike tax, pagoPA, bills, ski passes.

The main strong point is the value for money of both rates

  • subscription: the first year is free and from the second year you will pay only 1.50 euros per month, which can be activated online on the official website;
  • pay per use: 50 cents per day, but only the days you use the device. Validity is for 24 hours following first entry. The activation and delivery cost is 10 euroswhich can be activated online on the official website.

The main point of weakness is the missing coverage of the Sicilian motorways and the Schio – Valdagno Tunnel (both of which will be activated soon) and the possibility of purchasing train and bus tickets.

What does MooneyGo offer and how much does it cost

On the other hand, MooneyGo offers the following services, in addition to electronic tolls: Milan C area, Messina Strait ferries, affiliated car parks, public transport, train tickets, bus tickets, taxis, sharing services, blue lines.

It is available in two formulas instead

  • subscription: it costs 1.50 euros per month to which you must add 5 euros of activation cost;
  • pay per use: 2.20 euros in the months in which the user uses the deviceto which a 10 euro activation cost is added.

It is very close to UnipolMove in terms of costs, i.e. 1.50 euros per month but with 5 euros for activation and no free month, but it can already represent a preferable solution today for those who live in Sicily who already have Sicilian motorway coverage.

Among the main weak points is the absence of the toll discount for motorbikes (equal to 30% on Telepass and UnipolMove), the impossibility of paying by debit from the current account and the bureaucratic process for changing the license plate which must be carried out necessarily through assistance.
