The best-selling cars in Europe in March 2024

THE FIRST QUARTER – Registrations in the EU reached 1,377,541 units in March, a decrease of 2.7% compared to the same month of the previous year. However, in the balance sheet of the former three months of 2024deliveries were 3,380,048 units, an increase of 4.8%.

GOLF ON THE RISE – According to data released by Jato Dynamicsnet of a contingent context due to the increase in inflation and interest rates, and despite a decline in demand for EVs, the Tesla Model Y it turned out to be the best-selling car in March 2024, thanks to 26,847 units. Second place for Volkswagen Golfat 25,779 and with an increase in volumes of 43%, third for the Dacia Sandero with 25,660 new license plates and a growth of 23%.

GROW MORE – The Dacia Sandero, which is still the best-selling in the 1st quarter of 2024, the Renault Clio (22,964 units and +26%), the Ford Puma (19,077 and +26%) and the Toyota Yaris (19,056 and +39%) , are the models in the top 10 with the higher growth rate. Other protagonists last month were the Honda ZR-V, with almost 2,600 units, the Honda E:NY1 with 2,290 cars, the BMW i5 with 2,168 license plates, the Mitsubishi Colt (1,635) and the BMW iX2 (1,331).

VOLVO GROWING – Between DRINK (which is the best-selling Battery Electric Vehicle, behind the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 (11,758 units and -13%), in March the Volvo EX30 with 7,598 units registered, making it the brand’s third most popular model after the XC40 and XC60. Tesla led the BEV ranking in Europe with 39,000 units registered in March. However, this marked a 36% decline in registrations compared to March 2023. Volvo also performed well, with a 70% increase in registrations, thanks largely to the success of the EX30.

DOWN THE EVS UP THE HEVS – Analyzing the market dynamics, the decline in electric vehicles has caused asurge of the demand for hybrid (called in jargon HEVHybrid Electric Vehicle), with 382,700 units registered between January and March this year, representing the highest number of quarterly registrations for the category since 2021. Hybrid volumes increased by 18% compared to the corresponding quarter of 2023.

THE CHINESE – Decreasing i Chinese manufacturers, which have lost market share. Last month, registrations of cars produced by Chinese brands stood at 33,000 units, an increase of 0.7% compared to March 2023, and with EVs accounting for 36% of the total (including MG, which constitutes 61% of Dragon EV registrations in March).
