Telepass is a widely used device in Italy, but now it will be possible to test it outside national borders.
The management of highways throughout Europe it happens very differently from country to country, with Italy being one of those states that has decided to focus on a choice linked to tolls based on distance. A choice that has very often generated quite a bit of criticism, considering how the costs are very high, especially for those who are forced to move all over the country for work.
In fact, for several years companies have been requesting a choice linked more to Vignettes, i.e. coupons that are purchased at the beginning of the year and allow travel for a certain period on the motorway at a fixed price. For Switzerland, for example, we chose to use the Cartoons per calendar year, while in Austria and Slovenia we have moved to flexible periods.
What is certain is that in Italy the question would be much more complicated, given that our nation includes two major islands as Sicily and Sardinia, with the Vignette which would penalize them greatly, given that they are Regions forced to use means such as planes or ships. It is no coincidence that nations with island geographic zones use the toll system.
This can be seen for example in France, Spain, Portugal or Croatia, all nations that are very close to Italy. Unfortunately, until recently, however, it was not possible to enter these states and comfortably pass the toll booth with the Telepass, but now things are changing and the bond between the giants of the Old Continent is becoming increasingly closer.
European Telepass: here’s where it works
The European Union is carrying out a series of common projects to improve the internal connection between the various states as much as possible, with the creation of the European Telepass which has now become reality. This is a project that is not yet complete, so much so that there are few nations involved, but they are very close to each other.
Italy is part of the group of nations that can take advantage of the European Telepass, with its use being the same as within the borders of the Bel Paese even in the case of trips to France, Croatia, Spain or Portugal. For now, these are the only nations that have decided to join the common project which sees small differences.
Clearly, to be able to use this service you need to spend more than the standard one, with the activation cost being 10 euroswhile they will have to be paid every month 2.40 Euros. For the European Telepass you can choose to connect it to a maximum of two license plates per Italy, France and Croatiawhile it will be only one for Spain and Portugal.
