Webuild, the rector of the Gregori Polytechnic at the top of the infrastructure giant

ANCONA A designation that gives the Marche a success that is not at all obvious. The shareholders’ meeting of Webuild – one of the major global players in the construction of infrastructure and also in pole position to build the bridge over the Strait of Messina – on Wednesday appointed the rector of the Polytechnic University of the Marche Gian Luca Gregori as president. In recent weeks, three proposals were filed for the renewal of the governance of the former Salini Impregilo works and construction giant.

The winning proposal

In the list presented by the partners Salini spa and Cdp Equity, the name of Gregori surprisingly popped up, immediately designated as a possible president in place of Donato Iacovone. Now the hypothesis has materialized. Born in 1961, from San Benedetto del Tronto, the rector of the UNVPM, former professor of Economics and Business Marketing, has been a member of Terna’s board of directors since May 2023. He had also come close to becoming president of the INPS – his name was very popular in Rome – but then health reasons forced him to give up. Now a new chance presents itself on the Webuild benches.

The team

Not a small chance: we are in fact talking about one of the major global players in the creation of large complex infrastructures for sustainable mobility (railways, metro, bridges, roads, ports), hydroelectric energy (dams for energy purposes, hydroelectric plants), water (purification plants, desalination plants, waste water management, dams for drinking and irrigation purposes) and green buildings (civil and industrial buildings, airports, stadiums and hospitals). An expression of approximately 120 years of engineering experience, it employs 87 thousand people of over 100 nationalities. Among the iconic projects created by Webuild, or in progress, Line 4 of the Milan Metro, the Cityringen in Copenhagen, the Sydney skytrain stand out Metro Northwest in Australia, the Red Line North Underground in Doha. The portfolio also includes new high-speed rail routes such as the new Genova San Giorgio Bridge in Italy and the Long Beach International Gateway Bridge in California. Without forgetting the Panama Canal expansion project.

And now, the new horizon has the outline of the bridge over the Strait of Messina. Pietro Salini, who remains CEO of Webuild, announced that the Stretto di Messina company has approved the update of the final project presented by the group, ready to start work immediately. A good result for Gregori, who won’t even have to leave his position as rector of the Univpm to take on that of president of Webuild. And an unexpected victory for the Marche region, which this time demonstrates that it has weight beyond its borders.
