Solidarity contract in Mirafiori, stop Stellantis car production for a few months

The news is sensational, but what was once the beating heart of the Italian automotive industry, Mirafiori, will stop until September. Nello Stellantis plant south of Turin no new cars will be produced until the end of the summer. This was decided following the solidarity contract that was signed with 1,174 employees employed in the large factory which until recently dealt almost exclusively with Fiat 500e.

The Mirafiori solidarity contract

The solidarity agreement it is an agreement that determines a reduction of both working hours that of salary. The same contract had already been accepted for the 986 workers on the Maserati lines in Mirafiori: it will last from 23 April until 4 August, that is, until the plant closes for the summer holidays. Car production at Mirafiori had already been greatly reduced, and in fact with this latest decision it will stop until September, when the plant will reopen its doors. In short, the situation is not rosy at all and the feeling is that this temporary choice can help, but only in the short term. Then, a more concrete intervention will be necessary to resolve the problems of a bogged down factory.

The signature is necessary to preserve the maximum possible number of jobs, guarantee a dignified transition path and for the best income protection. However, it is increasingly urgent for the government to intervene with an ad hoc industrial policy for the sector and for all the 500 models to be allocated to Mirafior as soon as possiblei”, commented the secretary of the FISMIC Torino union, Sara Rinaudo.

The decline of Mirafiori

The solidarity contract is the tip of the iceberg, which fits into a context in which it seems clear the will of Stellantiswhich however never stops declaring – in words – how central Italy is in their industrial vision, to invest less in the Bel Paeseand in particular to Turin, once the capital of Italian motoring. Starting from the new year, the 2,260 Mirafiori workers are on redundancy pay and car production has halved compared to 2023. Only one shift was carried out until March 30th. At the end of March, however, Stellantis had entered into an agreement with the unions for the voluntary voluntary exit, in short, dismissal in exchange for an economic incentive, of approximately 2,500 workers, including 300 Mirafiori workers.

The decline in production in Italy

Between production being moved abroad and no new elements being added to replace those who have retired, the decline of the Italian automotive industry under Stellantis now seems sunny. In the face, however, of increase in production strength in France, where important new sites have been opened. It is no coincidence that the Italian government recently thundered against Stellantis, recalling its commitment to producing at least one million vehicles in the country.

An extremely impossible target to reach, at least in 2024. For this reason it was decided to broaden the range of action, by bringing in some foreign builders, especially Chinese, to invest in the construction of new machines in existing structures. We’ll see if after the many rumors, someone will make his move. With all due respect to Stellantis.
