The personal income tax declared by Italians in 2023 guaranteed the State 174.2 billion euros (+1.9% compared to the previous year). Furthermore, according to data from tax returns, each Italian citizen paid on average 5,380 euros of Irpef which is declared by almost 32.4 million subjects, equal to approximately 77% of the total taxpayers. For approximately 9.7 million subjects the net tax was zero.

It should also be said that according to the distribution of the tax by income class, taxpayers with net tax and incomes up to 35,000 euros (80% of the total) declare 37% of the total net tax, while the tax burden remains largely partly on the shoulders of the remaining 63% who declare incomes exceeding 35,000 euros (20% of the total taxpayers).

Photographing the state of health of the queen of Italian taxes is the Department of Finance which has made public the data relating to the tax returns of natural persons presented in 2023 and referring to the 2022 tax year. The total total income declared amounts to over 970.2 billion euros (58 billion more than the previous year, +6.3%) for an average value of 23,650 euros, an increase of 4.9% compared to the average total income declared the previous year. The dynamics of overall income reflects the increase in income from pensions, employment and self-employment.
