All that is missing is official status, but fear has now become a certainty among unions and workers: Mirafiori will stop, perhaps even for a year. Because the new layoff period has not yet begun, with the de facto blockade of the entire plant, which on Monday Stellantis will offer (announce) its employees a “defensive contract”, i.e. cuts in hours worked and salaries for 1,200 employees on the Fiat 500e line. And the great escape began in Mirafiori.
The details on the solidarity contract are not yet available, but the one already applied for the over 900 Maserati line workers could be valid: i.e. a maximum cut of 20% until the end of the year. The one for the 1,200 workers of Fiat 500e will last until August 6th, which is the closing day of the Mirafiori plant for the summer holidays. And then?
Afterwards there is what was announced by CEO Carlos Tavares in recent days at Mirafiori: an investment of 100 million euros for redo the 500e – which continues to not sell, even beyond the fact that without government incentives the market is asphyxiated – with a new platform and a “homemade” battery, to therefore make it cheaper in production but above all on the market. This – and it was not lost on those who understand production on the day of the announcement – means redoing part of the production line, with cuts in shifts and employees. How long? Tavares spoke of an interval between 18 and 24 months.
In this situation, therefore, how can we not understand those who decide to save themselves? There are already 260 – out of the 300 initial offers – the body shop workers who have accepted the resignation incentive planoffered by Stellantis, a plan that in Turin alone concerns something like 1,520 workers and employees. And it’s just the beginning, they swear in the Mirafiori area.
