Vehicle thefts are growing in Italy: + 7% in 2023 and a total that, in the last ten years, rises to 1 million and 550 thousand, only 609 thousand of which were later found. Car thefts are growing more (+11%) than motor vehicle thefts (+2%). At a European level, our country is second only to France, which however has a decreasing trend. If the average of the other EU member states is less than 40 thousand vehicles stolen in a year, in Italy in 2023 the thefts were higher of the triple: 131,673. The data emerge from the ‘Dossier on vehicle thefts 2024’, developed by LoJack Italia, a CalAmp Group company leader in automotive telematics solutions and in the recovery of stolen vehicles, which collected and analyzed the data provided by the Ministry of the Interior on 2023 and integrated them with those coming from national and international calculations and reports on the phenomenon.

Thefts of cars and motorbikes: how Liguria fares

In 2023, Liguria ranks twelfth among the Italian regions with 1,761 stolen vehicles, the good news is that the figure for those that are then found is very high, equal to 1,125, with a percentage of 64%. The highest in Italy together with Tuscany and Umbria. Much higher than the Italian average which stops at 44%.

The regions with the highest data

The regions with the highest number of thefts are Campania, Lazio, Puglia, Sicily and Lombardy, where around eight out of ten thefts are concentrated; Campania and Lazio are also those with the lowest percentage in terms of recoveries, at 36 and 35% respectively. In Puglia and Sicily it rises to 47%, in Lombardy to 48%. The lowest number of stolen vehicles is recorded in Valle D’Aosta (61), however the percentage of those found is low, equal to 39%. At the bottom of the article the complete ranking with all the data region by region.

The most stolen cars in Italy

At an Italian level, according to the study data, one in five vehicle thefts concerns an SUV/Crossover, one in every three vehicles equipped with contactless opening systems (with opening and closing of the passenger compartment without inserting the key). But what are the most stolen cars? The Fiat Panda leads the way with 12,571 thefts (1 stolen vehicle in 10 is a Panda), then the Fiat 500 (5,889), the Fiat Punto (4,604), the Lancia Ypsilon (4,472), the Fiat 500 L (2,637) and the ‘Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2,075).
