Teenagers and adult books: which ones and why. Series of meetings with Nicola Galli Laforest organized by the Hamelin Association, Bologna
Four meetings to take up a new challenge within the panorama of the promotion of reading dedicated to adolescents: abandoning the safe haven of the Young Adult genre to venture into the complex world of books for adults in search of themes and motifs close to youthful sensitivity.
If, in fact, it is true that Young Adult books were able to awaken the interest of a large number of girls and boys in the early 2000s, it is equally evident that the advent of new ways of using texts and online content has decreed a substantial change in the reading habits of young people.
Thanks to the spread of mobile connections and the massive use of new invasive tools and channels (Fanfiction, YouTube, Booktok), for more than ten years Istat data has revealed a constant decline in the number of readers among teenagers. Despite the negative data, Istat data still reveal that young people are stronger readers than adults; it is therefore essential to intercept new strategies to maintain a point of contact between girls, boys and books.
The objective of the course is to involve all those who work in various capacities with adolescents in outlining a possible map of the textual elements to be favored in order to reawaken the sentimental and aesthetic interest of young people towards reading. Within a transition age in which the personality is still fluid and conflicts and emotions are experienced with unparalleled intensity, the reading of structured texts that explore human situations in a more complex way than web content could make a real difference.
Students are required to be willing to read the titles recommended from time to time and to actively participate, a fundamental step in starting a discussion and reflection that can lead in new and multiple directions.
