cleared stands, abandoned volumes and decay

Features book stalls in via delle Terme di Diocleziano they were officially cleared in recent days. The area will soon be redeveloped from neglect, poor hygiene and rampant illegal construction, but the consequences of this removal are clearly visible – unfortunately – for everyone to see. Where until recently there were stands equipped with the most disparate texts and works, now construction site nets and barriers metal ones that prevent anyone from approaching.

Abandoned books

Torn to the ground and stacked up one on the other, the books draw one today
sad and merciless scenario in the Piazza della Repubblica area, symbol of obviously incorrect disposal which frames the city center of the capital. The titles are now unusable, also and above all due to the pouring rain that fell on Rome in recent days, surrounded by plastic boxes, various waste and wooden planks belonging – probably – to the retailers who previously managed their activities.

Comments after the eviction

The stands were defined by many as a little corner of culture in the center of Rome, a peculiarity of the area between Republic square And Terms, within which it was possible to find novels, biographies and used books. A point of reference for residents, tourists and in general for all reading enthusiasts, since it was often possible to find unobtainable material – or almost impossible to find – at advantageous prices. There closure of the stalls was, in fact, poorly digested not only from the residents of the capital, but also from many tourists, as can be seen from some comments: «It’s sad that the stands were cleared out. For us they represented a fixed stop every time we stopped in Rome.”
