in “Liberation” a book that questions history

TERMOLI. The aim of the book “Adelmina’s War” by Antonietta Aida Caruso, presented at the municipal auditorium yesterday, April 24, was to focus attention on the absurdity of all wars.

“The story was written two years ago, on the occasion of the Premio Giampietri literary competition – the author told us – In the period of belligerence we are experiencing, I feel crushed by the gravity of the events and the uncertainty of the future. Like many, I am astonished at how we can accept that thousands of children are dying of hunger or under bombs in Gaza, how missiles are launched at a distance with such ease, how atomic war is threatened as if it were a perverse game, while political scientists , commentators and journalists pronounce the word war with ease, with a sense of inexorability and obviousness that is disconcerting. But what can I do? – I said to myself – Nothing! So I took up this prize-winning story, transformed it into an illustrated novel and published it. This book was a reaction to my discouragement and sense of helplessness.

The book wants remember of an event that actually happened. He wants to remember it today, precisely because of what we are experiencing.

More than 80 years have passed since these stories. There is a past that seems removed. There memory it should serve precisely to prevent what happened from happening again. Beyond the great story, there are myriads of microstories which attest to the absurdity of wars. The story told in this book is one of those little stories that interested a little woman, in a small town in Molise. In her smallness, in her bewilderment and in her innocence, she nevertheless tells us a great truth: there is not an aggressor and a victim but in war everyone is a loser. This story also demonstrates it and deserves to be told. Of course it’s only one drop in the ocean of evil and hatred, but reminds us that war is always madness.”

The evening opened with the screening of the video-poem hymn to Mother Earth by the Bari poet Maria Pia La Torre, which created an atmosphere of attention and emotion.

The book was presented by the Neapolitan literary critic and writer Elvira Del Monaco Roll who explored the topics covered through observations and questions aimed at the author; the president of the Archeoclub Oscar De Lena screened the video “Landing of the English in Termoli”, which, through period photos, commemorated the landing of the Anglo-Americans on the Molise coast in October 1943; the actresses Franca Sciarretta and Annamaria Graziani, from “Laltrotheatro” by Ugo Ciarfeo, interpreted the dialogue of two protagonists of the novel. The evening ended with thunderous applause from an attentive and involved audience.
