UNESCO: a book illustrated by an Italian to safeguard multilingualism in the world

ROME, APRIL 23 – As part of the action plan for International Decade of Indigenous Languages ​​2022-2032recognized byUnited Nations General AssemblyL’UNESCO collaborated with the best publishers from around the world to create the illustrated children’s book ‘What Makes Us Human’translated into Italian ‘The most precious thing’, written by the Brazilian author and linguist Victor DO Santos and illustrated by the Italian artist Anna Forlati.
Considering that 40% of approximately 7,000 languages currently spoken around the world could disappear at the end of the 21st century, UNESCO is working intensively on a ten-year action plan to draw attention to the tragic disappearance of indigenous languages ​​and the need to preserve and celebrate them. The goal is to spread the richness of their language to younger generations.
Through the game of puzzles, this book gives voice to the different realities of multilingualism in the world and invites us to share an infinite number of traditions, beliefs and lifestyles that must be preserved.
The language of a people is a vehicle for raising awareness for young generations, ‘The more there is linguistic diversity, the more we enrich ourselves as human beings’, it is written in the volume.
