ORTONA. In the historic church of S. Caterina d’Alessandria in Ortona, Marco Patricelli’s latest book “Cutting the rope” was presented, which recounts the escape of the royals, Badoglio and the military leaders with a wealth of historiographical and documentary content from Ortona to Brindisi, after the announcement of the armistice on 8 September. A sad page of Italian history characterized by the lack of sense of responsibility, the superficiality and inadequacy of the role of the protagonists of the time which led to the implosion of Italy as a state and as a nation. The real disaster occurred in Pescara where on the afternoon of September 9th an impromptu crown council was held in which only personal safety and not that of the country was thought about.

The lunch eaten in the castle of Crecchio was embarrassing, rich and abundant, served by Duke Bovino and commented in French by his guests, almost as if they were ashamed of speaking Italian.

The fear of being captured by the Germans is such that Badoglio already the evening before, in Pescara, climbs onto the Baionetta while the royals and the other officers, in full improvisation, take the opportunity to make a wrong turn and find themselves in front of the Aragonese castle of Ortona and be guided by a young fireman to the pier of the port of Ortona.

Andrea Di Marco also spoke at the event and provided a further historical contribution in the reconstruction of that unfortunate period for Italy, from the fall of fascism on 25 July to 12 September with the liberation of Benito Mussolini in Campo Imperatore for work of the Germans with Operation Quercia.

The event was organized by the local section of the Catholic Union of Italian Artists (UCAI) and opened with the initial greetings of the president, Novelia Marinozzi, the Ecclesiastical Assistant, Don Giuseppe Grasso and the vice president Diva Santorelli who explained the aims of the association and commitments for the upcoming jubilee year. Students from some middle school classes were present at the presentation of the work and enlivened the morning with questions and stories from their grandparents who saw the royals in the streets of Ortona in those days. Those same streets which unfortunately, a few months later were the scene of an atrocious battle, fought “house by house” and defined by Churchill as the “Stalingrad of Italy”.
