Castelsardo, the Castellanese excellence award was given to the painter Giovanni Cau

Room Pupil of some of the most illustrious Sardinian painters such as Stanis Dessy, Filippo Figari, but above all Costantino Spada, who discovered and understood his pictorial talent, “Giovanni Cau da Castelsardo” as he loves to sign his works, deserves to be considered among the exponents main features of the Sardinian panorama of this century, both for the complexity and variety of themes, and for the continuity of his pictorial career, which began in the mid-1950s.

His works are located not only in private collections, but also embellish important civil and religious buildings. During the conference conducted by Salvatore Carboni, after the greetings of the mayor of Castelsardo Antonio Maria Capula, the interventions of the writer Andrea Tola, of Don Francesco Tamponi, director of the Cultural Heritage Office of the Diocese of Tempio-Ampurias, of the archaeologist Domingo Dettori and local history expert Piero Fattaccio, who provided an overview of the various facets of this artist who brought prestige to the city on a regional and national scale with his unmistakable colours.

The emotion of the family members and the many present for “Van Cau” (as Fabrizio De Andrè liked to define him), who was absent due to health problems at the time of receiving the well-deserved recognition, was great.
