The ancient centre, probably of Etruscan origin, was important in the Middle Ages when it became one of the fortified citadels of the Pisan Republic. Subsequently, under the reign of Grand Duke Ferdinand II, the village was elevated to marquisate in 1639, in favor of the Florentine Luca di Girolamo degli Albizi. In 1781 Lorenzo Casimiro degli Albizi, without heirs, renounced the fiefdom and Castelnuovo was integrated into the minor Podesteria of Montecastelli, established with the Leopoldine judicial reform of 30 September 1772. Castelnuovo then became the seat of the mayor’s officewhich also included the municipality of Silano.
