What is David Croneneberg’s disturbing new film about?

What is The Shrouds about? David Cronenberg’s new film will be presented next week at Cannes Film Festival 2024and while waiting for the premiere we reveal everything you have to hope for about this very interesting and disturbing project by the celebrated Canadian author.

The Shrouds stars Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger (who replaced Dune star Lea Seydoux, who was initially cast in the co-protagonist role already during the making of Crimes of the Future, the director’s previous film), Guy Pearce and Sandrine Holt and in Cannes it will be in competition, which will offer Cronenberg another opportunity to win the much coveted Palme d’Or, which he came close to in 1996 with his masterpiece Crash (which only won the special Jury prize at the behest of the then president of jury Francis Ford Coppola, who this year will return to the competition with his new film Megalopolis: needless to say we will see some good ones).

The plot of The Shrouds revolves around a rich and innovative businessman, played by Vincent Cassel, who is trying to grieve the loss of his wife (a very personal topic for David Cronenberg): to come to terms with the death of his beloved, he builds a device to connect with the dead and which allows us to ‘live follow’ their decomposition inside the tombs.

The Shrouds does not yet have a distribution in Italy, but in France it will be released on September 25th by Pyramide Films: it will have a duration of 119 minutes, which will make it the longest film of David Cronenberg’s career.

On Perfect Days (DVD) It is one of today’s best sellers.
