During an interview with EWdirector Shawn Levy talked about the surprises in store for fans in Deadpool & Wolverinewhich hits theaters in July.
Speaking about appearances by prominent figures, Levy explained that they didn’t just tick boxes:
We didn’t start with a wish list [di cammei]. Ever since we started writing the story of Deadpool and Wolverine, the story has shown us the characters, not the other way around. Aaron returning as Pyro was a consequence of this, and this applies to all the characters you will see in the film.
He then explained that the film changed dramatically when Hugh Jackman came on board the project:
Everything changed dramatically the day Hugh called Ryan. We had thought of many ideas about the possible stories of Deadpool 3, which were more of sequels to the first two Deadpools, but none of those stories involved such an epochal turning point.
In an interview with Empire he then alluded to Marvel’s recent flops:
You’d have to live in a glass globe not to know that the latest Marvel films have failed to move the world like so many films have done. We come at an interesting time and we are something very different. Whether these are messianic proportions or not, time will tell.
