Bombing of Piazza Teatro in ’43, wreath laid in homage to the victims – TraniLive.it

April 27, 1943 was a black page in the history of the city of Trani, hit by an Anglo-American air raid during the Second World War which cost the lives of 35 people. The city was bombed and one of the orders exploded in Piazza Teatro causing the death of 21 civilians and 14 soldiers, all of whose names were inscribed on the commemorative plaque installed in that very square for the 80th anniversary of last year. This morning at 10 am, with the presence of the deputy mayor Fabrizio Ferrante, the local police commander Leonardo Cuocci Martorano and Mrs. Domenica Sonatore Cosentino, who survived that sad event by pure chance, homage was paid to this tragedy and to the victims with the placing of a commemorative wreath. On that occasion, the San Ferdinando municipal theater, located right in Piazza Teatro, was also damaged, and was later demolished in 1958.

«It was Easter Monday 1943. The day before, April 25, my family had celebrated Easter, together with my third birthday. I was very young so I remember little. This story for me is like a fairy tale: they have told it to me many times” are the words of “Mina” Cosentino who recounted that “Bloody Easter Monday” in this article on our website which can be consulted by clicking here.
