2 rare euros: here is the official value

The rarity of 2 euro coins can vary greatly, with a value ranging from a few euros to thousands of euros. In particular, there are some rare 2 euro coins that can be worth up to 2,000 euros.

Here are some examples of rare 2 euro coins and their approximate value

Being able to make an estimate on rare 2 euro coins is really complicated, but we will try to present you some specimens which, in addition to rarity, also have preciousness as a fundamental characteristic. Let’s see what they are.

The coin is certainly prestigious 2 euro commemorative of Grace Kelly which was issued in 2007 from the Principality of Monaco to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the death of Princess Grace Kelly. This is a coin that had a very limited circulation: 20,000 specimens for the Vatican and 100,000 specimens for San Marino. The national side of the coin features a profile portrait of Princess Grace Kelly by the French artist

Rene Baron. On the side common to all 2 euro coins, the map of Europe is depicted as usual. The initial value of this coin can vary between 500 and 2,000 euros, depending on the storage conditions.

To the 2004 goes back there 2 euro coin created for the Olympics held in Athens the same year. This commemorative coin had a very limited circulation and has few variations, but still very rare. Some of these variants, for example in Brilliant Uncirculated and therefore in excellent condition, can be worth more than 1000 euros.

In the 2019on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Germany issued a coin 2 euro commemorative. On the national side of the coin are depicted hands raised in a sign of joy and doves in flight passing through the passage finally opened between West and East Berlin on 9 November 1989. The side common to all 2 euro coins bears, as always, the map of Europe. It had a very respectable print run, with 2 million pieces in circulation, but with only 2,000 pieces in the Proof box set. The initial value, i.e. the nominal one, of the coin was 2 euros, but today its numismatic value varies between 3 and 5 euros for coins intended for circulation, while of those 2,000 in Proof cases the numismatic value rises exponentially, also considering the historical value that this coin takes on.

Commemoratives and collector’s items: this is why it’s up to the 2 euro coins

Commemorative 2 euro coins were introduced in 2004 as one way to celebrate significant events or anniversaries within the European Union or in individual Eurozone countries.

There are several reasons why 2 euro coins were chosen as commemorative coins:

  • Wide circulation: The 2 euro coins are one of the most used and widespread coins within the eurozone, with an estimated number of around 34 billion pieces in circulation. This ensures that the commemorative messages and images printed on these coins reach a wide audience.
  • Distinctive design: The 2 euro coins have a unique design compared to other euro coins, with a wider edge and the possibility of including a commemorative image on the national side. This makes them particularly suitable for commemorative purposes.
  • Lasting value: The coins are made from strong, long-lasting materials, meaning they can be kept as a keepsake for many years.
  • Collectible potential: Commemorative coins can represent an interesting collector’s item, both for their numismatic value and for their historical or cultural value.

Precisely because they are potentially important, the minting of commemorative 2 euro coins follows very strict rules. For example, each Eurozone country can issue a maximum of two 2-euro commemorative coins per year. In exceptional cases, a third commemorative coin may be issued to celebrate an event of particular importance for the entire European Union.
