The latest hypotheses, also relaunched by the famous Egyptologist Zahi Hawas, attributed the causes of the deaths to bacteria present in the tomb. Now, the new study explains that the Yellow uranium dust left in graves as ‘legacy of hazardous waste’. It is hypothesized that those who built the funerary monuments knew the qualities of the toxins, thus explaining the nature of the prophecy often left handed down on funerary inscriptions: “those who break this tomb will meet death from an illness that no doctor can interpret”.
RADON
The theory demonstrates that the tomb was indeed mockingly “cursed”, but in a deliberately biological, and not supernatural, way. “The level of radiation inside Tutankhamun’s tomb is so high – we read in the study – that anyone who had come into contact with it could have also developed radiation sickness.” And it is not an isolated case. The study reveals that unusually high radiation levels have been documented in the ruins of Old Kingdom funerary monuments. From Giza to Saqqara, Geiger counters have detected the radioactive gas radon in several tombs. To think that thousands of vessels excavated under Djoser’s Step Pyramid in the 1960s contained up to 200 tons of substances that have yet to be identified.
