Surprised by the attacker outside the house

According to the security official, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, the attacker shot Om Fahad while she was in the car in the Zayouna neighborhood. Another security source said the attacker pretended to deliver food.

Fahad sentenced to 6 months in prison in 2023

Om Fahad had become famous for her light-hearted TikTok videos in which she danced to Iraqi music while wearing tight clothing. In February last year, she was sentenced to six months in prison for sharing “videos containing indecent speech that undermine public decency and morality”. The government, also in 2023, had launched a campaign to clean up social media content that violated Iraqi “morals and traditions”. A Home Office committee had also been set up to comb TikTok, YouTube and other platforms for footage deemed offensive. According to the authorities, several influencers have been arrested. Civil liberties remain limited for women in Iraq. In 2018, model and influencer Tara Fares was killed by men in Baghdad.
