Ukrainian women who were raped by Russian soldiers during the invasion will be compensated in the coming weeks. The Guardian reports this, recalling that the move was strongly supported by the first lady, Olena Zelenska, who defined the decision as “an important step towards restoring justice”.

“Compensation to victims of serious human rights violations, including victims of conflict-related sexual violence, is not just about economic support. It is necessary justice not only in Ukraine,” Zelenska stressed.

According to the Global Survivors Fund, which is administering the project with Ukraine using funds from donor governments, it will be the first time survivors will receive compensation during an active conflict.

“Rehabilitation and compensation are elements of reparation, but what survivors find very important is recognition,” said Esther Dingemans, director of the fund, launched in 2019 by Nobel Peace Prize winners Dr Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad to help survivors of conflict-related sexual violence.
