New twist in the legal case involving Begona Gomez, the wife of the president of the Spanish government Pedro Sanchez. The Prosecutor’s Office requested today, Thursday 25 April, the dismissal of the preliminary investigation against her, opened by the judge of the preliminary investigation section n.41 of the Court of Madrid for alleged abuse of privileged information and corruption in business. He makes it known El Paison their site. The same Prosecutor’s Office has therefore presented an appeal before the provincial Audiencia court of Madrid to dismiss the case opened by the investigating judge in the preliminary investigation phase on the basis of a complaint presented by the right-wing union Manos Limpias based on a series of articles journalism published in conservative newspapers such as, for example, El Confidencial. Various sources, cited by the Spanish newspaper, say that there is no “sufficient and concrete evidence” in the complaint for admission to the proceedings.

The news of the investigation against Gomez inevitably caused a political earthquake in Spain. Prime Minister Sanchez announced yesterday a 5-day break from his duties to evaluate whether it is “worth it” to remain at the top of the executive after the accusations raised against his wife. “Is it worth remaining at the helm of this government or should I give up this high honor?”, he asked in the long letter addressed to his citizens and published on his channel harshly the prime minister’s decision to take a pause for reflection: «The president cannot resign like someone who goes across the bridge because he doesn’t justify himself», Feijoo told reporters, accusing Sanchez of «putting up a show as a teenager so that behind asking him not to leave and not to get angry.” For the leader of the People’s Party “everything seems to indicate that Sanchez has launched a political survival operation to govern out of compassion”, concluded Feijoo.

The dilemma that is tormenting the Spanish prime minister, whether to resign or remain in government, will be resolved in a press conference on April 29, in which Sanchez will make his decision known. Meanwhile, the PSOE, the executive and socialist militants have rallied around the prime minister, after the shock of the “letter to citizens”. “We are all very committed to ensuring that the decision that Pedro Sanchez will make on Monday is to continue leading an essential project for this country, one of economic and social success,” they say. “The right and far right have crossed too many red lines, personal attacks are unacceptable and must stop once and for all,” said the number two of the executive, deputy prime minister Maria Jesus Montero on the Radio Cadena Ser. And he branded as “petty” the interpretation made by the PP and Vox in the opposition as to whether Sanchez’s move responds to a political or electoral strategy. A demonstration of solidarity with the Prime Minister has been called for Saturday in Madrid and a collection of signatures has started on Change.org with an appeal to the Prime Minister to stay at Moncloa.
