The Government of Jamaica has “made the decision to recognize the State of Palestine”. This was announced by Jamaican Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith.

“Jamaica continues to support the two-state solution as the only viable option to resolve the long-standing conflict, ensure Israel’s security and uphold the dignity and rights of Palestinians,” Johnson Smith said in a statement released last night. “By recognizing the State of Palestine, Jamaica strengthens its defense towards a peaceful solution”, underlined the minister from Kingston.

Johnson Smith says the decision is based on Jamaica’s concerns about the war in the Gaza Strip and the deepening humanitarian crisis.

According to the minister “the decision is in line with Jamaica’s strong commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter, which seek to generate mutual respect and peaceful coexistence between states, as well as the recognition of the right of peoples to self-determination”.

Kingston “continues to support all efforts to de-escalation and establish lasting peace in the region, imploring all parties to consider the dire consequences of further conflict and to commit to diplomatic solutions that ensure security and sovereignty everyone,” says Johnson Smith. Jamaica now joins the 140 member states of the United Nations that have recognized the State of Palestine, the statement noted.
