Shoigu’s deputy arrested

The Russian Investigative Committee announced the arrest of Russian Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov on charges of receiving a bribe. Tass reports this, adding that Ivanov is suspected of having received a “particularly significant” bribe.

According to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, the official faces up to 15 years in prison. Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Vladimir Putin had been informed of Ivanov’s detention. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was also informed.

The Russian media spread the CV of Ivanov, 49 years old. Since May 2016 he was deputy minister, responsible for army logistics, housing and medical care.

While the case explodes, Shoigu is concerned with managing the new phase of the war in Ukraine, in a context characterized by the imminent arrival of US weapons in Kiev. Moscow, Shoigu says while meeting with senior military officials in Moscow, will extend aerial bombing of Ukraine. “We will increase the intensity of raids against Western logistics centers and weapons warehouses,” says the Defense Minister.
