«No proof from Israel of the accusations against UNRWA»

In an independent analysis commissioned by the UN and led by the former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, We read that Israel has yet to provide evidence to support its claims against UNRWA. The statements are those of January, when Netanyahu’s government accuses: «At least 12 UNRWA employees they had direct involvement with the October 7 massacre.” Words with immediate consequences: the main donor countries – including Italy – cut funding to the UN agency that deals with Palestinian refugees. The Israeli government says it is certain that a significant number of UNRWA personnel has close ties with Hamas and Islamic Jihad and is therefore not neutral.

In Colonna’s report we learn that since 2011 UNRWA has regularly supplied the Jewish State the lists of its employeesand that «the government of Israel he never showed any concern relating to the agency’s staff”. Furthermore, we read that UNRWA has «a significant number of procedures to ensure compliance with the humanitarian principle of neutrality” — more than other organizations — and, again in the report, ways to implement them are suggested.

Tamara Alrifai, UNRWA spokesperson, shares: «We welcome the results and the independent review’s recommendations, particularly confirmation that the agency has established many policies to ensure neutrality is maintained. The report confirms that UNRWA is irreplaceable.”

Colonna reminds the UN: “The agency plays an indispensable role in the region”, especially now, with the devastation of the war.
