Yesterday evening, Thursday 13 April, the boy was an eighteen-year-old German tourist who fell from the deck of the Costa Toscana, which set sail a few minutes from the port of Civitavecchia. According to the first information, reported by Il Messaggero, it would have been a voluntary gesture.
The 18-year-old was traveling with his mother and sister on the ship that was sailing towards Genoa. As far as we know, the boy went up on the deck of the Tuscan coast, undressed, left behind his mobile phone and documents, and jumped into the sea, under the astonished eyes of the other passengers. It took several hours of research by the Fire Brigade to recover the body: despite the timeliness of the intervention, the two-metre high waves and rough seas made operations particularly complicated. Eventually the divers were able to hook the body, which was then transferred to theVerano morgue. To understand whether or not the magistrate will order the autopsy, even if there would be very few doubts about the causes of death.
There are few doubts about the nature of the 18-year-old’s gesture: it seems that the boy suffered from depression and that he has already attempted suicide several times in the past, without success.
The other passengers who witnessed the gesture of the 18-year-old were shocked and could do nothing to avoid it. At that moment, in fact, the deck was full of people who were enjoying the journey to Genoa after the ship had just set sail from Civitavecchia. No one would have ever thought that the boy would go towards the bridge to jump into the sea and take his own life.
