ROME – Silence is golden, even for health. Current scientific research, in fact, is confirming that the silence can become a protective factor for the mind and general health of the body, especially when intentionally sought.

The meeting is dedicated to conscious silence and the neurophysiological, psychological and molecular aspects related to it. I.C.O.N.S. (International Conference On The Neurophysiology Of Silence) in programma all’Sapienza University of Rome the July 3rd from 9.45 am to 1.30 pm in room 10 of the Psychology department (via dei Marsi 78).

The event is promoted by Patrizio Paoletti Foundationa philanthropic research organization in the neuroscientific and psychopedagogical fields, and is the first of the review The quest for global healthwhich places the concept of health not only as the absence of disease but as a condition of full psychophysical well-being. The next two meetings, scheduled for September and November, will be dedicated to the themes of peace and resilience.

On July 3rd at Sapienza, ICONS will see researchers, psychologists and neuroscientists confront each other, bringing their own point of view and the results of some of the most recent studies on silence.

In particular, Grace Serantoni of RINED – Research Institute of the Patrizio Paoletti Foundation will present the data of a survey on the effects of a meditative practice based on silence in a group of teenagersThe research is part of the protocol Prefiguring the Future developed by the Foundation and applied in some Italian schools with the aim of providing children with practical tools to cultivate and train their resilience, or the ability to emerge strengthened from adversity and crises. At the base is the Spherical Model of Consciousness which will be illustrated by the creator, Patrick Paolettiand from the neuroscientist Tal Dotan Ben Soussan.

During the meeting we will also talk about the health benefits derived from connection between silence, psychic activity and motor activitybringing the concrete case of the Quadrato Motor Trainingmeditation in movement that consists of performing a series of simple steps for a few minutes under the guidance of vocal instructions, in the space of a square. An exercise that combines a high cognitive tension and a low stress condition, in a sort of attentive relaxation which, data shows, improves coordination between different brain centers, increasing creativity and reducing automatic thought patterns. The experience will be illustrated by Michael Zampieri of the Department of Experimental Medicine of La Sapienza University.

Furthermore, an in-depth study will be dedicated to the possibility of suspend automatic reply thanks to intentional silence, which produces an inner space in which we can better understand ourselves, people and events. The topic will be discussed Stefano Lasaponara of the Department of Psychology of La Sapienza University, which will analyze in particular the role of confirmation biasor the human tendency to seek information that is already in accordance with one’s own belief system, in the spread and rooting of fake news.

In the end, Valerio Santangelo and Tiziana Pedale of the University of Perugia will present a study based on functional neuroimaging aimed at investigating the phenomenon of fear extinction in conditions of stress.

Finally, all participants in the meeting, both in person and online, will participate as a demonstration act in a minute of silent meditation conducted by Patrizio Paoletti.
