Rome, gas pipeline at risk of explosion: station and homes evacuated

Since early this afternoon there has been panic in Northern Rome due to the failure of a high-pressure gas pipe that has required a state of emergency and the evacuation of a train station and several homes.

Fear in northern Rome: gas leak near a train station. The circulation of trains and cars is prohibited. Serious risk for residents

Two teams of the Fire Brigade have been on the Via Trionfale since around 2.30pm today, due to a worrying gas leak which activated the Operations room and the emergency protocol of the emergency vehicles throughout the quadrant at risk.

The men of team 8A and the CRRC, the Chemical Radioactive Detection Vehicle, are intervening on the road precisely at the height of the Ottavia station where the fault was detected.

The gas would have leaked from a high pressure pipe with the risks of a worsening could lead to, among other things, formation of a crater at the point of failure; the expulsion of debris, a high-velocity jet of gas and the lowering of oxygen levels, which can cause asphyxiation.

At the moment the safety operations implemented are those of interdiction of the Rome-Viterbo railway and the Via Trionfale, with the forced evacuation of the families residing in the apartments adjacent to the area of the fault currently monitored.

The closures

The closure of Via Trionfale was carried out in the section between the intersection of Via di Casal del Marmo-Ottavia and the intersection with the Grande Raccordo Anulare-Via Ipogeo degli Ottavi in both directions

The intervention is currently still ongoing, approximately three hours after the alarm and the urgent request for assistance on the gas pipeline.
