Municipal elections 2024, the results of the administrative elections in Lecce: recount in 4 sections

In the Apulian city, the counting of the administrative elections which took place on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June did not end normally. The data from four sections, deemed inconsistent, were sent to the district central office for recount. The centre-right candidate, Adriana Poli Bortone, is stuck at 49.64% against 47% of the centre-left and M5s candidate, the outgoing mayor Carlo Salvemini. So it is not yet known whether a run-off will be necessary or not

In Lecce, the counting of the municipal elections which were held on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June gave an uncertain outcome because the data for four sections (25, 26, 35 and 88) were not entered: considered inconsistent, they were sent to central district office for the recount. In the Salento capital, the candidate of the united centre-right, the former mayor of Lecce and minister Adriana Poli Bortone, has repeatedly exceeded, albeit slightly, 50% of the votes during the counting and is currently stuck at 49.64% against 47% of the centre-left and M5s candidate, the outgoing mayor Carlo Salvemini. The centre-right, therefore, still hopes to be able to win in the first round. But depending on the outcome of the last 4 missing sections (out of 102 total) a run-off may instead be necessary (ELECTIONS: LIVE NEWS – ADMINISTRATIVE RESULTS IN REAL TIME). In the late afternoon the Court’s electoral commission met to verify the 4 sections. At the end, the outgoing mayor Carlo Salvemini called a press conference but the Commission’s work could continue until late.

The municipal elections

Lecce is a municipality with more than 15,000 inhabitants, so if no candidate in the first round obtains an absolute majority, a run-off will be held between the two most voted. The possible run-off round will be held on Sunday 23 June from 7am to 11pm and on Monday 24 June from 7am to 3pm.

Who were the mayoral candidates in Lecce

Running in Lecce was Carlo Salvemini, the outgoing centre-left mayor also supported by the Five Star Movement. The centre-right fielded Adriana Poli Bortone, the former iron lady of Palazzo Carafa who was already mayor from 1998 to 2007. Also running for the seat of mayor was Alberto Siculella, the five-star member who, after the alliance formed by the M5S with Salvemini, took the distances from the Movement. The last candidate was Agostino Ciucci, the Dea-Fazzi doctor known for his positions against vaccines during the pandemic and more generally against the system: he presented himself with a civic list, “Rights and Civilizations for Lecce”.
