GUBBIO – That stretch of road continues to be a problem, it is misleading because people think they can increase speed and overtake when in fact the space is limited and the risk of a head-on collision is very high if prudence and care are not used. Even yesterday morning (Friday 31 May) there was proof that the state road number 219 Pian d’Assino, between the Branca and Torre Calzolari exits, could prove to be a trap. The latest accident in the dramatic series cost the life of 78-year-old Anna Cappannelli from Eugubia.

Around 10.30 am, a car heading towards Branca and a truck coming in the opposite direction, towards Gubbio, collided violently. From an initial reconstruction there appears to have been a head-on collision. The woman was taken by ambulance to the Torre Calzolari exit where the air ambulance was waiting for her with healthcare personnel activated for the emergency transfer to the Santa Maria della Misericordia hospital in Perugia. At the hospital in the capital she entered code red with all the necessary attention and the first health checks to verify the repercussions of the very serious accident. She was driving the car, a black Renault, and she immediately appeared to the rescuers in worrying conditions, while the driver of the heavy vehicle was uninjured. The air ambulance, the 118 ambulance, firefighters, carabinieri and local police were brought to the scene to carry out the necessary investigations which will establish the dynamics of the accident.

The elderly woman was followed throughout the investigations: she underwent a CT scan for polytrauma, was admitted to intensive care with a reserved prognosis, with her conditions constantly monitored, and around 7 pm she died. The impact was particularly violent: the road was invaded by the wreckage of vehicles, so much so that traffic was interrupted for some time in both directions, with the vehicles inevitably diverted onto the old Pian d’Assino which crosses the hamlets to the east.

The accident raises the issue of safety again on a stretch of road which has been the scene of more or less serious accidents, in several tragic cases with controversies and protests. Inaugurated in 2005, the stretch from Montefiore to Branca had been mercilessly branded as already old by the then bishop Mario Ceccobelli who spoke at the ceremony and was very harsh in addressing the local politicians of the time who for environmental reasons had only wanted two lanes.
