Apple Pencil went out of its way: the differences between the models and which one to choose today

Apple Pencil Pro it is the new version of the famous “stylus” from the Cupertino company. Presented on the occasion of the launch of the 2024 iPad Pro, it is added to Pencil 2, Pencil with USB-C And First generation Pencil. Today it is therefore possible to choose between four models, all regularly available in the official store of the Californian giant (and therefore all regularly in production). The differences in some cases are marked, although the price range is overall limited. As we will see, however, a lot depends on the usage needs and, above all, on the iPad model you own. But let’s proceed in order.

Apple Pencil Pro

The new ones iPad Pro they are tablets that also think of themselves a little as computers, but above all as graphics tablets. Tools for creatives, in short. Apple Pencil Pro is therefore configured as the perfect accessory for those who own these models, thanks above all to the addition of haptic feedback and gyroscope. The first is used to perceive when we activate the menu to choose the function or feature that interests us, by tightening the handle. As seen in the photo above. The gyroscope was instead inserted to be able to change the thickness of the line by rotating the device we hold in our hand. Like the previous version, it charges magnetically by attaching it to the iPad. It is only compatible with M4-based iPad Pros and with them M2-based iPad Air and, as you can imagine, it is perfect above all for those who would use it in a professional context, perhaps in the world of graphics or digital design. Also because it costs 149 euros.

Apple Pencil with USB-C

It is the least expensive model currently available. In fact, it costs 89 euros and, from an aesthetic point of view, the appeal to Second generation Apple Pencil it’s clear. The finish of the body is in fact satin and two sides are flat, so as to be able to grip it better and position it more easily on the edge of the Compatible iPads (through the usual magnetic mechanism). The presence of USB-C port it can be used on two fronts: on the one hand it is used to recharge the internal battery of the pen, on the other to carry out the first pairing with your iPad using the cable included in the Apple tablet packages. The Cupertino company has included tilt sensitivity and low latency technology, so you can easily use it to take notes. And this is certainly the main use for which to purchase it.
It is compatible with iPad Pro 12.9 (3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th generation) iPad Pro 11 (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation) iPad Air (4th and 5th generation) iPad 10th generation and iPad mini 6th generation.

Second generation Apple Pencil

It is the best alternative to Apple Pencil Pro. Compared to the latter, it does not have haptic feedback, a gyroscope or the “Where is” function. All other features are shared, including the design with flat edges, which makes it easier to grip. Furthermore, this model also recharges through the magnetic attachment on compatible iPads.
And it is precisely the compatibility with your iPad model that should guide the purchase. Those who own the iPad Pro 12.9″ (sixth, fifth, fourth and third generation), iPad Pro 11″ (fourth, third, second and first generation), iPad Air (fifth and fourth generation) and iPad mini (sixth generation) will have to look to this model, perfect both for taking notes and for professional use.

First generation Apple Pencil

Considering the cost of 119 euros (therefore very close to the higher models), First generation Apple Pencil It’s the least sensible model to buy today. This is because it loses several features and is only sensible to use for taking notes. Furthermore, it is necessary to recharge it by inserting it directly into the Lightning port of the iPad, as it is not equipped with wireless charging.
Even in this case, however, there is the detail of compatibility. Those who own models such as iPad Pro 12.9″ (second and first generation), iPad Pro 10.5″, iPad Pro 9.7″, iPad Air (third generation) iPad (tenth, ninth, eighth, seventh and sixth generation) and iPad Mini (fifth generation) will necessarily have to look at this model.

The best alternatives to Apple Pencil

Some third-party manufacturers have launched alternatives to the Apple Pencil over the years. It is difficult to find models capable of including all the technologies of the Cupertino company’s pens, but some represent valid alternatives in the logic of using the accessory above all for taking notes. One of them is Logitech Crayon. Compatible with all iPad versions after 2018, it is characterized by an ergonomic design that is especially aimed at students. It can be used with most apps that use Apple Pencil and costs less than 70 euros.

A valid alternative is also represented by Adonite Notes M. In this case the price rises compared to the Logitech model (it reaches 90 euros), but it has some goodies such as the magnetic attachment to the body of the iPad (like Apple Pencil) and the possibility of also being used as an external mouse using the bluetooth.
