European cups, what happens after Atalanta wins the Europa League

Italy’s football team is chasing a record. Our A league aims to show up at the starting blocks of next European cups with nine teams. The big dream, however, is to bring six of them to the Champions League. Joints are needed.

How six Serie A teams can qualify for the Champions League

Let’s start from the beginning. Italy is confident of five places in the Champions League from next season and, therefore, of a total of eight in Europe, adding Europe and the Conference League to the equation. With the current situation in the Champions League standings, Inter (Italian champions), Milan, Juventus, Bologna and Atalanta would go. The Goddess because they are Europa League champions, as well as because they are fifth and no longer reachable. Roma and Lazio would end up in the Europa League, Fiorentina in the Conference. As mentioned, however, there can be six teams in the Champions League. Atalanta’s victory against Bayer Leverkusen was needed and in Dublin the Goddess’ dream became reality with Lookman’s hat-trick (22 May). However, now Gian Piero Gasperini’s team, which still has two championship games to play, the last day and the recovery match against Fiorentina on 2 June, must not finish in the top four to allow the sixth team, namely Roma, to Daniele De Rossito go to the Champions League.

What happens if Fiorentina wins the Conference final

With this scenario, there would then be only one team in the Europa League (Lazio) and one in Conference League (Fiorentina). To add the ninth Italian team admitted to the European cups, however, Fiorentina’s victory in the Conference final in Athens (on May 29th against Olympiacos) is needed without the Italian team finishing among the top seven in the championship. With the current ranking – also given the victory of the Italian team on the last day against Cagliari – and assuming Fiorentina’s victory in the Conference we would have: six teams in the Champions League (Inter, Milan, Juventus, Bologna, Atalanta and Roma); two in the Europa League (Lazio and Fiorentina); one in the Conference League (Torino is currently ninth, but Napoli is still in the running).
