Four people died and at least 27 were injured in the collapse of a two-story building in the seaside area of Palma, on the Spanish island of Majorca. The accident, the causes of which have not yet been ascertained, occurred around dinner time: a restaurant, the Medusa Beach Club located on the ground floor of via Cartago, was sunk into the basementand several people were trapped.
The Iberian emergency services immediately went to the scene and found a dramatic scene with dozens of injured people and at least four confirmed deaths. As El Pais explains, sources from the Local Police of Palma who are currently collaborating in the rescue efforts have assured that the number of victims will increase.
The injuries are “of varying severity” and according to security force sources the collapse occurred in a room occupied at the time by customers and workers, and there were also numerous tourists nearby. Psychologists from the Official Faculty of Psychology of the Balearic Islands were activated to assist the victims, while the Palma Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation.

All the ambulances available in Palma have been moved to via Cartago, where the activity of the rescuers is frenetic. Some neighbors explained that they heard a loud noise and then the screams of trapped people.
