At least four people died and more than 25 were injured when a restaurant terrace collapsed in the tourist resort of Playa de Palma, Palma de Mallorca. According to the emergency services, the collapse occurred around 8.30pm in a building at number 36 Calle Cartago in the Medusa Beach Club restaurant, a well-known venue with musical shows on the Playa de Palma seafront, crowded with customers at the time. The Medusa Beach Club is on two levels, the ground floor and a terrace on the first floor, which according to initial information collapsed, causing the place to sink. According to the testimonies of inhabitants in the area, reported by the local media, the collapse was preceded by a dull noise. One of the victims is believed to be a club worker of African origin. The mayor of Palma, Jaime Martinez, and the deputy mayor Javier Bonet went to the site with the police to assist in the rescue effort and ascertain the causes of the tragedy.
