What are the anti-burglary classes of windows and doors and how to choose the right one

An anti-burglary system limits or prevents burglary and protects the inhabitants of the house and the precious goods contained therein. The anti-burglary class is the parameter used to indicate the degree of security of the windows and their ability to resist attempts to force the closing systems and tamper with the safety devices.

The anti-burglary classes are regulated by European Community regulations (UNI EN 1627:2011), which established a classification and the tests to which they must be subjected.

In detail, there are six classes for burglar-proof windows. The security level increases as the class increases: the higher it is, the more difficult it will be for burglars to reach their objective quickly.

There first class anti-burglaryclass RC 1, guarantees minimal resistance which fails to hinder expert thieves and burglars. They are suitable for limiting the intervention of inexperienced attackers who do not have any type of tool at their disposal. They are the suitable solution only in places where there are no valuable assets, such as cellars.

There second classRC 2, is associated with fixtures that manage to oppose resistance of at least 3 minutes to burglars equipped with simple tools. These include screwdrivers, pliers, pliers or knives. It is still a very low class, suitable only for those private homes that run very limited and limited risks.

The third class fixtures, RC 3, are those who manage to resist break-in attempts carried out by expert attackers who use more specific tools, such as hammers and levers, for at least 5 minutes. It is the right solution for those buildings that present a medium-low risk level and, in particular, for the common areas of condominiums, such as the entrance doors to a building.

For a medium-high risk you must choose at least the fourth classRC 4, which significantly increases the time required for burglary even when the thief uses cutting tools, such as drills or saws. It is the class present in many homes located in high-risk areasin small jewelery shops or in other environments where valuable goods are present.

There fifth gradeRC 5, guarantees a high level of safety. Resists electrical equipment for 15 minutes. The sixth class, RC 6, is attributed only to fixtures that have a maximum resistance level of at least 20 minutes.

The class best suited to the fixtures in your home depends from your needsbut it is advisable to opt for at least an RC 3 if the area you live in is at medium risk.
