OpenHub Lazio, in co-planning with the Orizzonti Sabini APS Association, is pleased to announce the ninth appointment as part of the project to enhance local popular traditions. The event will be held on Monday 20 May 2024, at 3.30 pm, at the OpenHub Lazio headquarters in Via Pennesi, 2 in Rieti. During the conference the carnival events of the Rieti area will be presented with the coordination of Francesco Rinaldi and the participation of Luciano Bonventre which will address the theme: “The Zanni del Cicolano”.
The “Zanni” are characters who have roots in the Latin mask of “Sannus” mentioned by Cicero in “De Oratore”. They represent a variety of figures from the peasant imagination, which have evolved from antiquity to the present day. The main masks include the Turk, the Warrior and the Zannone, who, with their ability in dialogue and in octave rhyme verses, accompanied by the warlike movements of the “Sword Dance”, create a particular form of Moorish which culminates in the ” Conquest of the Castle”, recalling the deeds of the Paladins of France and chivalric poems. They are joined by the Doctor, the Witch, the Hermit, the Gypsy, the Hunter and the Bear, the Mazzamorello, the Magician Malagigi.
The meeting is open to all those interested in the discovery and conservation of our cultural roots. It will be an unmissable opportunity to deepen our knowledge of our traditions and to contribute to their valorization and transmission to future generations.
The event, co-planned with the Orizzonti Sabini APS Association, was selected among the proposals received in response to the “OpenCultura” call, promoted by OpenHub Lazio. Orizzonti Sabini APS is a social promotion association that tells the history, habits, customs and traditions of the Rieti area through theatre, music, singing, painting and photography.
