The Carabinieri of Provincial Command of Reggio Calabriacoordinated by the Prosecutor Emanuele Crescenti and by the Deputy Prosecutor Davide Lucisano of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Palmi, have notified the suspension from public offices for 10 months to two officers of the Municipal Police of Taurianovainvestigated for omission of official acts.
The facts
The facts date back to the morning of 6 December 2023, following a road accident that occurred along the Taurianova ring road, during which a 52-year-old man died. The man, alone driving his car, had lost control of the vehicle due to an illness and had violently collided with a light pole, a few meters from the edge of the road. Several witnesses had witnessed the event and one of these, coming across the local police patrol made up of today’s suspects, had given them the alarm.
The investigations
What happened next was the subject of an accurate reconstruction carried out by the Carabinieri of the Taurianova Station and Operations Section. The military personnel, in fact, by cross-referencing the witness statements of those present with the video recordings of the cameras in the area, as well as with the GPS track of the two policemen’s service car, found that the latter, having become aware of the accident, had actually went to the scene but, once they arrived, they continued ahead, totally failing to activate the emergency car or make the road safe.
The accusation of omission
The omission, according to what emerged from the investigations, led to a significant delay in the intervention of the police, so much so that, only an hour later, following a call to 112, the Carabinieri of the Taurianova Company arrived on site , certifying the death of the 52-year-old.
The reconstruction of the investigators also made it possible to disavow the defense theories put forward so far by the two agents, who during the investigations also conducted interrogations before the investigating judge who adopted the precautionary measure, Dr. Francesca Giovinazzo of the Court of Palmi.
In fact, the magistrate did not accept the argument of the suspects, who claim that they were unable, when the company car passed by the GPS, to identify the place of the accident. On the basis of the evidence collected so far by the Palmi Prosecutor’s Office, according to the prosecution hypothesis supported by the investigating judge, the car involved in the accident would have been clearly visible from both directions, also because the vegetation at the edge of the road was not so thick.
The proceeding is currently pending in the investigation phase and the actual responsibility of the persons receiving the precautionary measure, together with the validity of the accusations made against them, will be examined during the subsequent trial. Further investigative and evidentiary developments cannot be ruled out, including in favor of the people under investigation.
