Don Minzoni, life and death between diaries and investigations

The public meeting scheduled for Friday 10 May, at 5 pm, at the Malatestiana Library is dedicated to the figure of Don Giovanni Minzoni – the priest murdered by the fascists in 1923 in Argenta. The great hall will host a double presentation of books organized together with the Historical Institute of the Resistance and the Contemporary Age of Forlì-Cesena and other local entities. These are the books “L’affaire don Minzoni. The murder, the investigations, the trials” (Franco Angeli, 2024) written by Andrea Baravelli and Paolo Veronesi, and “Don Giovanni Minzoni. Memorie 1909-1919” (Diabasis) a edited by Rocco Celato and Gian Luigi Melandri, with a preface by Daniele Menozzi. The afternoon, with free admission, will be introduced by the President of the Historical Institute Ines Briganti and will be enriched by the contributions of Stefano Campana of the ‘Benigno Zaccagnini’ Association and the respective authors.

“The Don Minzoni Affair” retraces the investigations, taken from court documents and often unpublished archive documents, into the elimination of the anti-fascist priest, loved by the population, very active in social issues, member of the People’s Party, founder of the boy scouts. The work is completed by an investigation into the lives and destinies of the main protagonists of the affair.

The volume published by Diabasis and edited by Rocco Celato and Gian Luigi Melandri collects the pages of the diary from 1909 to 1919, from priestly ordination to the first pastoral experiences, from spiritual crises to the First World War. These are documents published for the first time by Lorenzo Bedeschi, scrupulously compared with the originals, plus over one hundred unpublished pages.
