Comment on the Gospel of the day, 5 May 2024 –

What is striking today is how many times the word “love” appears. It all depends on our ability to love. Walking this earth giving up love means throwing away the only opportunity we have to know God.

At first glance it may seem easy, but this commandment, in its simplicity, forces us to take responsibility for the relationships we have the grace to build throughout our lives.

If we remain in the love of Jesus we can truly rejoice, even when fears, anxieties and disappointments seem to dominate our existence. The greatest love is the one that abandons its own interests to embrace the risk of giving itself, especially where it is not easy to glimpse reciprocity or perhaps where we have to bear heavier crosses than those that have fallen to us.

It is a logic that seems far from our being creatures often rooted in selfishness and that survival instinct that focuses entirely on comfort and individual satisfaction.

We did not choose to love first but we were loved by Someone who desires freedom for us. Knowing this love through the eyes and arms of those who are, have been or will be in our hearts is essential to break away from the patterns that often characterize our daily lives. The only way to bear fruit is to be creative in love!
