Most likely there may have been an illness – although investigations are still underway – at the origin of the accident which occurred yesterday morning in Sant’Antonio di Pavullo, along the road that leads to the hamlet of Coscogno. Around 8.30 a Fiat Panda with an elderly couple on board who appear to be residents of Formigine went off the road and ended up hitting a tree in the meadow located under the roadway along Provincial Road 22, not far from the intersection with via Giardini.
The causes of the accident are still being examined by the local police of the Frignano Unit who intervened together with the 118 called by some passers-by. The medical personnel who arrived on site with an ambulance and a medical vehicle tried to resuscitate the 86-year-old man, Francesco Andrano, who was driving the car. Unfortunately for him, however, there was nothing more that could be done, despite the attempts by the rescue team to save him from death: the doctor was unable to do anything other than confirm the pensioner’s death. The intervention of doctors and nurses also focused at the same time on his 79-year-old wife, who was sitting in the passenger seat.
The elderly woman, after being stabilized on site, was transported to Baggiovara hospital by ambulance: she was found to have medium serious injuries. The road in the section of the accident was temporarily closed by the Frignano local police officers, to allow rescue and investigation of the accident and the traffic was diverted onto other arteries. The firefighters also intervened at the scene of the accident to make the car safe. The investigations into the dynamics of the tragic accident – into how it was possible that the car suddenly changed direction – are still underway, but the fact that there were no other vehicles involved also makes it possible to hypothesise that it was a a sudden illness that struck the elderly driver and caused the elderly man to lose control of the car. However, subsequent investigations will establish what happened, perhaps even hearing the wife’s story.
