Berti intervened after a no vax sign appeared in the cemetery where her husband was buried yesterday. «Samuele firmly believed in science – writes Berti – just as I believe in it. He knew that science does not always offer the answers and solutions, but it is the only path that rational and intelligent people, such as he was and I am, can take when faced with certain problems. Superstition, false faiths, fanaticism and foolish credulity did not belong to him, just as they do not belong to me. We never cared about what was inside the vaccines, which is what seems to worry anti-vaxxers the most. In those terrible months of Covid his only thought was not for himself, but for the many people around us who needed to be protected. If they had told him that there was bleach in the vaccine he would have had it injected anyway, because this is how a person of value behaves, that he thinks first of others and then of himself. And a firefighter has that altruism inside him even before he puts on his helmet for his first day on the job, otherwise he would choose another profession.”
The post continues: «The person who defaced the wall of the cemetery where he rests, however, doesn’t have it. It reveals a selfishness and superficiality in him that Samu would have despised from the bottom of his good heart. The acts of vandalism made him deeply angry: if he ever found our son or daughter spray-painting a wall he would have played them, because he had enormous respect for public affairs, and he taught and passed that respect on to his children in every possible way. Whoever committed this ignoble act not only did not know Samu, but he tarnished his memory and his memory. That today you force me to defend here, as I believe and hope I have always done with my voice against injustice (and he has always appreciated this thing about me) with the little energy I have left, while instead I should be thinking about my children and to me.”
The wife concludes like this: «I would never have thought that his death could be exploited, much less for a battle that I absolutely do not share and which offends us in every fiber of our soul: pain adds pain. And I want the author of this gesture, if he reads my words, to know that there was no need to give me a little more.”
