Daniele Breganze, carabiniere, originally from Palermo, was traveling alone driving his Nissan Juke. For reasons yet to be ascertained, in the early afternoon he collided with an articulated lorry that preceded him at the entrance to the Cipolla tunnel, a few hundred meters after the Brolo junction along motorway 20 towards Palermo.

The impact was fatal for the 23-year-old. The driver of the heavy vehicle was uninjured and then taken to the Sant’Agata di Militello hospital in a state of shock. The 118 rescuers arrived on site immediately but there was nothing that could be done for Breganze.

In the stretch where the accident occurred, like many on the A20 Messina-Palermo, there is a narrowing of the road: you can only travel on one lane. A short distance away, just over a week ago, a 66-year-old lost his life in another accident.

The 118 rescuers were supported by the traffic police of Sant’Agata di Militello, the fire brigade, the motorway emergency response vehicles and the CAS and by a patrol of the Carabinieri of Patti.

The prosecutor on duty at the Patti Prosecutor’s Office, Giovanna Lombardo, after the medical-legal assessment and the completion of the findings, in the evening authorized the removal of the body and the transfer to the Papardo hospital in Messina for the autopsy.
