The Giro d’Italia handbike in Monfalcone.

Sports lovers, with and without disabilities, united by a passion for the “three-wheeled bike”, will compete together in the second stage of the 14th edition of the handbike Giro d’Italia That, on Sunday 12 May, it will stop in Monfalcone.

A leading sector initiative in Europe – organized by ASD SEO with the contribution of the Municipality of Monfalcone, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and the BCC Venezia Giulia and supported by the Italian Paralympic Committee, the CONI and the Italian Cycling Federation – which has the dual objective of promoting Paralympic sport and the valorisation of the territory.

The details of the race were revealed yesterday morning by the mayor, Anna Maria Cisint, together with the councilor for Sport, Fabio Banello, the president of the ASD SEO, Fabio Pennella, the President of the Italian Regional Cycling Federation Stefano Bandolin, the para-cycling champion who won the 1st stop in Genoa, Katia Aere, to the regional councilor, Antonio Calligaris, and to the President of Bcc Venezia Giulia, Carlo Feruglio.

Cisint: “Monfalcone protagonist of inclusive sport”.

“We are particularly proud of otake part in a stage of the Giro Handbike in Monfalcone, a very important international sporting event based on the values ​​that sport transmits: determination, sacrifice, inclusion and that teaches you to get up when you fall – commented Mayor Cisint. We have theimmediately said yes to this opportunity for our city because it is more than an event, also representing a healthy way to give athletes the opportunity to live an experience in which sport unites disabled and able-bodied athletes, who compete on equal terms to compete for the coveted pink jersey”.

As also reiterated by councilor Antonio Calligaris, the Region – primarily with president Fedriga and sports councilor Mario Anzil – strongly believed in the project, including the contribution of 40,000 euros in the 2023 budget to allow the event to take place.

The program and the route.

A circuit of “one hour and one lap” races designed to promote inclusion and to offer participating athletes the opportunity to compete in a final ranking which – similarly to what happens at a professional level – gives them the opportunity to wear the “pink jersey”.

After Genoa, Monfalcone will be the second stage of the Giro; city ​​chosen by the Giro organization for “the courage it has shown in relaunching itself thanks to best practices to make the city accessible to people with disabilities”.

The route, starting from via Valentinis at 11.00, will wind along the city center, touching via Tonzar, via Romana, via Tacitiana, via Matteotti, Viale San Marco, Corso del Popolo, via San Francesco, via Plinio, Via XXV Aprile , Via Giuseppe Parini, via Duca d’Aosta and via Matteotti, to then return, at approximately 12.15 pm, to via Valentinis.

The awards ceremony will be held in the Green Area, where a “pasta party” is planned for the athletes and their companions organized by the ASD Basket de Raza. The local section of the Italian Red Cross will be present throughout the race, making personnel and means available to assist the athletes in case of need.

In addition to the sporting competition, the Municipality of Monfalcone has organized a series of initiatives that will further enrich the race, with the aim of promoting sociality and making the city better known.

On Sunday 12 May, a cycling and food and wine village will be set up inside the Green Area with exhibition stands of products linked to the world of cycling and para-cycling and local food and wine;

From 9 to 18 May, inside the atrium of the Town Hall, the traveling exhibition “Fly high with sport” will be set up, supported by the FVG Region and the regional CONI. An exhibition of 30 photographs taken by Marco Mantovani, a photographer who follows the Paralympic national teams at the World Cup, European Championships and Paralympics. The photographs represent athletes of different nationalities participating in world, European or Paralympic championships in some of the main existing disciplines and with various types of disabilities.

The Municipality of Monfalcone also involved students from the city’s schools with a contest focused on the themes of accessibility and inclusion in sports through the creation of a photograph, a text or a poem relating to the theme.
