Lazio returns to the Champions League, Verona beaten 1-0

ROME (ITALPRESS) – Lazio beat Hellas Verona 1-0 at the Olimpico and rise to 55 points in the standings, -3 behind fifth-placed Roma (playing tomorrow at Napoli). This is the third consecutive home victory in the championship for Igor Tudor, who relies on the goal of the recovered Zaccagni in a special match as an ex, even if very little remains of his Verona today. There are three new January signings who will start in the yellow-blue 11: Swiderski, Noslin and Mitrovic. Marco Baroni in the press conference had asked his team not to “stay huddled in their own half of the pitch”, but the start of the match quickly turns into a monologue for Lazio, who took to the pitch with the usual 3-4-2-1 with Patric, Kamada and Isaksen as the only changes compared to the lineup seen against Juventus in the Italian Cup. It was the Dane who had the first scoring opportunity: in the 18th minute following a corner, the ball passed to the feet of Isaksen who tested the reflexes of an attentive Montipò with his big plate. Hellas comes close to scoring in the 34th minute: Mandas misses the exit on a sloping ball, Noslin acts as a buffer for Swiderski who kicks badly with a sure shot. In the 48th minute, Lazio were dangerous: Felipe Anderson moved the ball to the right and unleashed a shot from the edge of the area which landed on the crossbar. In the 54th minute Luis Alberto scares Montipò with a high shot after a counterattack started by Castellanos. In the 60th minute Tudor plays the Zaccagni and Pedro cards. It is the Spaniard who has the ball to make it 1-0 five minutes later, but following a suggestion from Kamada he shoots wide from a very favorable position, while in the 69th minute Montipò’s hands are needed on a powerful left foot from Castellanos. These are the dress rehearsals for the goal. In the 72nd minute Suslov loses the ball, Zaccagni starts the restart, exchanges with Luis Alberto and beats the yellow-blue goalkeeper on his post. In the 82nd minute it was instead a miracle from Mandas on Coppola’s deflection that saved Lazio, while on the opposite front Pedro hit the post from a free kick. The result no longer changes and it is Lazio who celebrate. Hellas remains on 31 points in the standings.
