Extreme defeat for Ternana at the ‘Liberati’: Ascoli advances with a Botteghin goal in the ninetieth minute and also represents a heavy blow for Fere’s dream of direct salvation. It was a match not to be missed and instead the red-greens emerged deceived from a match that was practically always channeled towards a draw. The four points won in the two previous away games seemed to have launched Ternana towards a downhill championship finish but instead after this defeat the rankings become very complicated again, with the Bianconeri catching up with the Rossoverdi on 37 points. An important blow also from a psychological point of view.
First half
Mister Breda changes a lot: compared to the away match against Brescia, the great former player of the day, Federico Dionisi, starts, preferred to Favilli and Raimondo. For him also the captain’s armband. Boloca preferred to Sorensen to cover the role of centre-right defender. De Boer back on the pitch from the first minute, after several matches in which Pyyhtia was preferred to him. In the Ascoli Botteghin he sits on the bench, as does Pablo Rodriguez. At the 20th personal action by Dionisi who stubbornly reaches the back but fails to serve Pereiro. From the following corner, Boloca’s header grazes the post to Vasquez’s right. At the 29th great opportunity for the Fere: Pereiro puts a chocolate for Carboni who reaches the back and finds De Boer, the Dutchman’s conclusion is lopsided but the position was optimal. In the 38th minute, after persistent action, Lucchesi cuts in half from an area of the pitch that doesn’t suit him for Casasola’s tap-in but the Argentine arrives a moment late. In the 45th minute, Ascoli conceded a sensational goal: from a low corner, the ball reached Vaisanen who fired high over the crossbar from two steps.
Second half
In the 50th minute, De Boer’s insistent action ends with a shot from Lucchesi that is too central, which Vasquez controls without difficulty. In the 57th minute, Dionisi stubbornly steals the ball while pressing the Ascoli goalkeeper and serves a great ball to De Boer: the conclusion is to be forgotten. It’s a shame because the Dutchman was in the penalty area. In the 70th minute Ascoli finds the back of the net with Rodriguez who puts it in the middle but Dalle Mura saves. One minute later, an incredible goal was eaten by Casasola who, two meters from Vasquez, served by Di Stefano, fired at the post. Very strong blow but it was enough to support it with ‘fairness’. In the 76th minute, Ascoli equalizes the sensational opportunities: Favasuli loses the ball in the middle of the field, it lands at the feet of Rodriguez who, just inside the area and from a central position, shoots at a ready Vitali. In the 90th minute the Bianconeri take the lead: a corner kick taken long by Caligara, the ball reaches Bellusci who puts it in the middle with his right foot, finding the header deflected by Botteghin in front of goal.
