“We have a potential of 200 appointments per day. And we still have vacancies”
The Vicenza police headquarters issued 13 thousand passports in three months, from January to March. That is to say 145 per day, pretending to also count Sundays and holidays. In reality, it would be more. Thanks to the new organization of the police commissioner Sallustio, who has made it a cutting-edge office in Italy, today the police headquarters is able to guarantee all applicants an appointment: this was not the case in the past. “We can handle 200 appointments a day.” The pilot experiment of the Vicenza police headquarters can be said to be successful.
Now another front of commitment is opening up: the Municipality and the Police Headquarters have signed an agreement which allows the police to draw up to 10 people from the register of municipal volunteers, who will go to work in the police headquarters offices, obviously wherever they can. The agreement was signed by the commissioner Sallustio and the mayor Possamai, also present was the director of the office, deputy commissioner Giulia Pretto. “A similar agreement already exists between the Municipality and the judicial offices,” Possamai recalled.
The staff provided by the Municipality, naturally, will work both for the needs of Vicenza and for those of the Bassano police station. Twenty people are involved, after the Sallust’s reform, to the passport sector. Being able to count on up to ten other people means increasing your potential by 50 percent. “We can manage up to 200 appointments a day, but the agenda still has free places,” underlines the commissioner.
How long does it take to get a passport? Even one day. As manager Giulia Pretto points out, having divided the agenda in two, with the ordinary part and the emergencies, was a happy operational decision. If the urgency of the request is proven, which can perhaps be for a week, a fortnight or even just one, the offices can organize themselves and respond to the needs of the citizens.
