He starts screaming in the middle of the night, then grabs a gas cylinder and a lighter, threatening to blow up the entire building with two other families inside, including four minors. Terror last night at Saint Anthony the Abbot, where only the intervention of the police made it possible to block a 41-year-old who had already saturated the air of his apartment with gas, making it unbreathable and at very high risk. “At the time we didn’t think about the possible consequences for us, we only realized that there was a danger after a few hours.” The three carabinieri heroes are the deputy brigadier Giovanni Tedesco and the two chosen officers Ciro Carotenuto And Michele Amarantein service at the mobile radio section of the company Castellammare di Stabia.

During the night they were out and about on the streets of the Stabia hinterland, for the usual routine checks. They were the ones who intervened, after having received the alarm received at the 112 station. A terrified woman said that her neighbor was uncontrollable and had decided to make an extreme gesture with a gas cylinder and a lighter. In a few minutes, the carabinieri reached via Casa Barone. «We started talking to the man, but he didn’t seem to give in and was intending for the worst – says the deputy brigadier German – but luckily we noticed that the front door was open. Then, while we continued to talk to him through the grates of the window, we distracted him with some noises and we broke in.”

Excited moments, which brought the carabinieri a few moments away from a possible explosion. While one of the soldiers managed to disarm the 41-year-old by taking the lighter from his hands, the other two removed the cylinder and closed the knob, taking everything outside. The 41-year-old was also dragged outside with difficulty and to safety, he was immobilized while waiting for an 118 ambulance. “Only afterwards did we realize that there could have been a potentially dangerous explosion for around twenty families in the area” is the thought of the three carabinieri.

The 41-year-old, rescued and sedated by 118 personnel, was then transferred to the Maresca hospital in Greek’s tower, where he is still hospitalized: he is well and his life is not in danger, but he will remain under observation for a few days. In the house, the police found dozens of empty bottles of alcoholic beverages and, given the precedents, they suspect he was also under the influence of drugs last night, when he kept the entire neighborhood of Sant’Antonio Abate in apprehension, barricading himself in the house and threatening to blow up the building with two other families inside.

«I want to express, on my behalf and that of all the citizens, thanks to the carabinieri who last night, endangering their own safety, carried out a risky intervention and prevented something irreparable from happening. Applause to them – says the mayor of Sant’Antonio Abate, Ilaria Abagnale – to the entire Company of Castellammare di Stabia and the Sant’Antonio Abate Station, which – together with the other law enforcement agencies – are committed daily to ensuring safety and legality in our territory”.
